Who are Big Sister mentors?
Big Sister mentors are UCF undergraduate and graduate women who choose to volunteer their time mentoring 7th grade girls on issues of empowerment, leadership, and critical thinking.
What are the expectations of Big Sister mentors?
Big Sisters are expected to be supportive, encouraging, and positive with their Little Sisters. Big Sisters will embrace the focus of YWLP and promote middle school girls’ self-esteem and leadership skills to the best of their abilities.
What is the Application Process?
UCF undergraduate and graduate women who apply to become YWLP Big Sister mentors, undergo an interview and selection process.
To become a Big Sister please complete the YWLP Big Sister application online or in the Women’s Studies Program office (Colbourn Hall 118). Interviews will be scheduled after applications are reviewed.
All Big Sister applications are due to the Program Coordinator by the first week of the semester one would begin Big Sister duties.
What are the Minimum Qualifications?
Minimum qualifications to become a Big Sister mentor include the following:
- Registered in at least one UCF course during the semester of participation
- No criminal convictions of any kind
- Become fingerprinted in Seminole County
What is the Time Commitment?
If selected after the interview process, there are two mandatory training sessions at the beginning of their first semester as a Big Sister, and each semester they subsequently serve as Big Sisters. A schedule with the dates and locations of the meetings, mentoring sessions, and weekend events will be provided duringYWLP training.
Once the training is complete, there are mentoring meetings every Wednesday afternoon. The weekly Wednesday meetings run 3:15pm-4:45pm for approximately twelve meetings per semester. Eight of these meetings are mentoring sessions at middle school campuses, four of these meetings are planning sessions on UCF’s campus to prepare to work with the 7th graders.
All of our program mentors are volunteers. In an effort to provide plenty of bonding time between Big Sisters and Little Sisters, YWLP hosts four free weekend events (at least one dedicated to community service) per semester with food and activities for the girls to work together and become closer. These events are open to all present and past YWLP participants, and are so aptly named Alumnae Events. Big Sisters are expected to attend a minimum of two Alumnae events per semester.
YWLP also encourages 7th graders to consider earning a college education, and provide one day-long event on UCF’s main campus to explore the school and participate in activities geared toward planning for the future and creating long-term and short-term goals coupled with feasible steps to achieve them. UCF Day is a mandatory event for all YWLP Big Sisters.
