Karina Cespedes

Karina Cespedes

Karina Lissette Cespedes, born in Havana and raised in New Jersey, holds a Ph.D. in Ethnic Studies from U.C Berkeley. Her research interests include U.S. Women of Color feminist thought and praxis, intersectional pedagogy, Cuban tourism, sex work and food security.  Most recently Karina has published on the legacy and afterlife of Cuban slavery while finishing her book “Hunger in Havana”.  She has co-authored articles in Souls: A Critical Journal of Black Politics, Culture and Society, the Journal for Social Work Education, as well as Social Identities: Journal for the Study of Race, Nation and Culture.  Additional works are published within the collections A Window into Cuban and Cuban American Studies,  Technofuturos: Critical Interventions in Latina/o Studies,  Tortilleras: An anthology of Queer Latinas and Performance, and This Bridge We Call Home...

Research Interests

Research areas include U.S. Women of Color feminist thought and praxis, intersectionality and feminist pedagogy, the legacy and afterlife of Cuban slavery, contemporary food insecurity within the context of Cuban tourism and sex work/affective economies.
