Recent Research Activities
My first monograph American Dharma: Buddhism Beyond Modernity was published in February 2019 by Yale University Press. I am now working on two book projects: (1) a co-written book with Amy Langenberg on sexual violations in American Buddhism, which is under advance contract with Yale University Press and (2) a co-edited collection with Scott Mitchell on Buddhism in America, which is under advance contract with Oxford University Press.
I am also participating in two research projects. One is called "Transforming the American Sangha: Race, Racism and Diversity in North American Insight Meditation,"which is being lead by the Center for Religion and Civic Culture at the University of Southern California. Details are here:
https://crcc.usc.edu/transforming-the-american-sangha-race-racism-and-diversity-in-north-american-in...
In addition, I am part of a five person core team of religious studies scholars working on a five year project called the Religion and Sexual Abuse Project, which has been funded by the Henry Luce Foundation. For details see: http://https//www.ucf.edu/news/ucf-researcher-to-study-sexual-misconduct-abuse-in-buddhist-communities/
I am in full support of the Anti-Racism and Indigenous Land Acknowledgement statement produced by the Philosophy department in solidarity with the Black Lives Matter movement https://philosophy.cah.ucf.edu/anti-racism-statement/. Some of my own research on racial justice and the impact of Black Lives Matter on American Buddhism can be found here https://news.cah.ucf.edu/news/ann-gleig-race-religion/?dept=84 In addition, I co-developed a project called "Teaching Race and Racism in Buddhist Studies," funded by the Ho Center for Buddhist Studies at the University of Toronto https://www.lionsroar.com/buddhist-studies-professors-launch-new-project-teaching-race-and-racism-in-buddhist-studies/
